Going Deeper Questions
- Read Exodus 12:29-30. Who put the firstborn to death? What did Pharaoh do? How could Pharaoh have avoided this fate?
- What does Pharaoh ask for at the end of Exodus 12:32? Is Pharaoh repentant? Why or why not?
- Who pressured the people of Israel to leave Egypt in Exodus 12:33? Why did they want them out so badly?
- What did the Israelites do in Exodus 12:35-36? What were they doing to the Egyptians? How did they do it? What does this teach us about God’s power, grace and deliverance?
- Peter Enns says: “The Israelites march out of Egypt through the front door, with dignity – not like dogs crawling through the back fence, but like God’s people. The exaltation of Israel is another humiliation for Egypt.”
- In Exodus 12:38 the text says, “a mixed crowd also went up with them.” Read Lev. 12:10-11 and Nehemiah 13:3. This is strong evidence that Egyptians joined Israel in the Exodus. What does this teach us about God’s salvation? What does it teach us about faith? Douglas Stuart: “In this regard they were predecessors to Ruth who declared to Naomi, ‘Your people will be my people and your God my God’ (see Ruth 1:16).”
- Read Exodus 12:40-42. Did Israel save themselves? Who saved them?
- Read Exodus 12:50-51. What was required for Israel to be saved? This is a picture of faith. Read Hebrews 11:1, 6. What is faith? Why is faith so important? Read Acts 16:31. How are we saved? Why is faith more than just lip service?
