Going Deeper

1. God promised Abraham that he would be blessed with many descendants and that through
him all the families of the earth will be blessed (Read Gen.12:1-3). How does Jesus fulfill this promise?

2. God made David a promise that his descendant would rule on his throne forever (Read 2 Sam. 7:16). How does Jesus fulfill this promise?

3. Read Isa. 9:2. Jay Sklar says: “The lands that first fall to Assyria are those on which the light of the world first shines, as Jesus begins his ministry ‘in the territory of Zebulon and Naphtali’ (Matt. 4:13).”

4. Read John 3:19-20. How will Jesus bring light? What is the response of the people?

5. Read Isa. 9:3. Read Isaiah 61:1-2. Jesus fulfills this passage in Luke Luke 4:16-30. How does his hometown respond? Why do you think they were so angry?

6. Read Isa. 9:4. Jay Sklar says: “Here the people enjoy the fruits of Yahweh’s victory without themselves needing to fight.” How have you seen God victorious in your life?

7. Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor. Read Isaiah 28:29. How has Jesus given you great wisdom in your life?

8. Jesus is Eternal Father – in that He is the King. Jesus is on the throne, reigning over the universe (Rev. 4:1-2). He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 19:16). Raymond Ortlund says: “This kind of king contrasts with even the best of the Davidic line that Judah has experienced so far, because these titles show that this king will be divine.” Have submitted to Jesus as King of your life?

9. Nancy Guthrie says: “Since Jesus is on the throne, you can stop trying to rule the world. You can stop all of your worrying and your vain attempts to control everything about your life and your family. The one who is seated on the throne is not only able to supply your needs and provide your protection; he has at his disposal everything needed to fulfill all of his promises to you. Because he is on the throne, your joy doesn’t have to be so tied to your circumstances, and your sense of security doesn’t have to be so easily shaken. The Lord reigns.” What will you do in response to this passage this week? Be specific.
