Going Deeper
- What did the people do in v. 2-3? How is their memory clouded? Read 1 Cor. 10:1-12. What does Paul say about the Israelites and what should the church at Corinth do? How does this apply to your life today?
- What does “grumbling” look like today? In what ways do you grumble?
- What is the test in v. 4?
- What is the point of the test (see v. 6-7, 11-12)? R. Kent Hughes: “To know that he is the Lord, therefore, is to know him as the God of glory.”
- What does God do in v. 9-10? Why is this significant?
- How does God provide for Israel in v. 13a? In v. 13a-15? Do they deserve such provision? What does this teach us about God?
- Read v. 17-18 Paul cites this in 2 Cor. 8:15. What is Paul’s point? Read 2 Cor. 9:6-15. How does this relate to what the people did in Ex. 16:17-18? Are you a cheerful giver? Why or why not? What will you do in response?
- How do some of the people fail again in v. 19-20? Why do you think they did this?
- Read v. 21-26. What is God commanding? Alec Motyer says: “The ordering of creation and the providence of the Creator await and meet the arising needs of the redeemed on their pilgrimage. Our needs have already been anticipated in his foreseeing, far-seeing grace, which is ever on our side.” How did the people fail this test in v. 27-28?
- Read v. 29-30 Peter Enns: “Keeping the Sabbath is something God does and the Israelites are expected to follow suit. The pattern is rooted in creation itself: the Israelites rest because God did.” Do you regularly take a day of rest to rejuvenate and focus on the Lord? Why or why not? Read Isaiah 58:13-14. What is the Lord saying?
- John Currid: “No concept of Sabbath rest has been found in ancient Egypt. That fact underscores the difference between Yahweh and Pharaoh: the God of the Old Testament is compassionate and caring towards his people. Pharaoh was merely a burdensome taskmaster.”
