Going Deeper
- Hebrews depends heavily on the OT (about 70% of Hebrews refers to the OT). Consider starting our Bible Reading Plan for the year. It includes both OT and NT passages on a five-day plan!
- God spoke “long ago” through the prophets and now speaks through His Son (Heb. 1:1–2). In what ways does God speak through His Son? Give some examples.
- Hebrews declares that God has given His final word in His Son (Heb. 1:2; John 1:14). What does this say about Islam, Mormonism or other religions that claim a new revelation has come from God?
- How does knowing Jesus is both Creator and Heir change how you view your life and possessions? (see Heb. 1:2; Col. 1:16–17). What would it look like to live this week as a steward rather than an owner
- Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the “exact imprint” of His nature (see Heb. 1:3; John 1:1–3, 14; 10:30–33; Phil. 2:5–6; Col. 1:15; cf. 2 Cor. 3:18; 4:4–6; Rom. 9:5). How might your prayers, obedience, or reverence change if you truly lived in awe of His divine authority?
- Jesus is either Lord of all or not Lord at all (Rev. 3:15–16; Matt. 16:24). Where might you be trying to live in the “shallow world in between”? What areas of your life reveal a “lukewarm” view of Jesus’ supremacy? How will you change this week?
- Christ upholds the universe by his powerful word (Heb. 1:3; Ps. 55:22). What burden do you need to release to Him today in trust? How does Jesus sustaining all things by His powerful word affect your anxiety or need for control?
- Jesus made purification for sins once and for all (Heb. 1:3; Rom. 5:8). Are you living in forgiveness—or still carrying guilt Christ has already paid for? Have you personally experienced the purification from sin that Jesus provides? Turn to Jesus in faith today!
- Jesus’ work of purification is finished and His reign is secure (Heb. 1:3; Ps. 110:1). How does this shape your hope in trials? How does Jesus being seated at the right hand of God give you confidence in suffering or uncertainty?
- Who or what competes with Jesus for the title “He’s him” in your life? God alone deserves ultimate allegiance (Heb. 1:4; Exod. 20:3).
- Luke 9:23 calls us to deny ourselves and follow Christ. Read Phil. 2:3-4. What example did Jesus give us to follow?
- What is one specific way you will “work out” your salvation this week in response to who Jesus is (see Phil. 2:12-13). Be specific.
