Going Deeper Questions
- R. Kent Hughes: “As the Israelites traveled that long and winding road, they often doubted whether God’s way really was the best way. But God knew what he was doing, as he always does.”
God’s way is the best way (read Romans 8:28). Why do we tend to question God’s ways? - Read Ex. 13:21-22. The Lord was with His people visibly. Read what Joshua tells the people after taking over for Moses in Deut. 31:5. Hebrews picks up Deut. 31:5 and applies it to Christians who put their trust in money. Read Heb. 13:5. How is this a comfort? Why should we not trust in money?
- Read Exodus 14:1-4. What does God do? Why?
- Read Exodus 14:5-7. R. Kent Hughes: “Satan never surrenders without a fight. This is not surprising because we were once his valuable servants, and he would like nothing better than to have us back under his employ.”
- How did the Israelites respond to the Egyptians coming (Ex. 14:10-12)? We will see this lack of trust in God again in Ex. 15:23-25; 16:3; 17:3; Num. 11:1-6; 14:1-4; 16:13-14; 20:2-5; 21:4-5.
- What was Moses’ response to the people (Ex. 14:13-14)?
- Charles Spurgeon: “I dare say you will think it a very easy thing to stand still, but it is one of the postures which a Christian soldier learns not without years of teaching. I find that marching and quick marching are much easier to God’s warriors than standing still. It is, perhaps, the first
thing we learn in the drill of human armies, but it is one of the most difficult to learn under the Captain of our salvation. The apostle seems to hint at this difficulty when he says, ‘Stand fast, and having done all, still stand.’ To stand at ease in the midst of tribulation, shows a veteran spirit,
long experience, and much grace.” - Read Ex. 14:15-22. How did the people cross over? Read Heb. 11:29.
- Tony Merida explains how this story relates to us: “We have been saved from the penalty of sin (justification). We are being saved from the power of sin (sanctification) We will one day be saved from the presence of sin (glorification).” Have you been saved? Are you being sanctified?
